Amendment 1, the Parks, Soils & Water Sales Tax, Approved by 80% of Missourians!
November 2016
Missouri voters widely re-approved the Parks, Soils & Water Sales Tax on Tuesday, Nov. 8th. Missouri State Parks will remain funded for the next decade! The tax is just one-tenth of one percent of sales taxes but makes up roughly 75% parks’ budget – vital funding for our state parks systems. In addition to supporting our state parks and keeping them free to enter, half of the revenue from the Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax will assist in soil and water conservation farming efforts that make the state of Missouri a model amongst farming states for our soil and water conservation successes. Our Missouri State Parks are among the top-rated parks in the country. Missouri sports 88 state parks and historic sites. The park system also includes the trails at the Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry, named for one of MCE’s most active executive directors. The parks cover a variety of ecosystems and support various types of recreational activities from hiking, mountain biking, and trail running to kayaking and camping. November 2016: The #moparkschallenge came to an end last Thursday, and MCE celebrated with participants at The Green Center in University City. Alpine Shop generously donated $1,000 worth of outdoor gear to our winners! A few lucky attendees won door prizes from Alpine Shop as well. MCE would like to congratulate the following participants in the challenge:
1. Most State Parks Visited: Grace Piontek won a 2-person tent for visiting nearly a quarter of MO State Parks (23).
2. Most People in a Parks Selfie: Adam Magnus won campout cooking gear for getting 8 people into a #moparkschallenge photo.
3. Photo Categories: Each photo category winner received a 2-person hammock with tree slings.
