Missouri Coalition for the Environment (MCE) celebrated our 56th birthday last week, and we have been reflecting on over 5 decades of impactful work to protect Missouri’s people and their environment. Every day we work hard to demonstrate what our name promises.
Missouri → Advocacy Across the Entire State
At MCE, our commitment stretches to every corner of Missouri. Historically founded and headquartered in St. Louis, we’ve made significant strides to expand our reach statewide.
This year marks a milestone with the addition of our first staff member based in Springfield, MO. Our expansion into Southwest Missouri is a commitment to providing even more support and advocacy in the region. Furthermore, we welcomed a new staff member in Kansas City just three years ago—the first time we’ve had representation there in decades.
Having team members on the ground in every region of Missouri enables us to deliver critical information and advocacy to thousands more Missourians on issues affecting our water, air, food, health, and environment. Our goal is to have coverage across the entire state including Southeast Missouri, but until then, we’ll be seeing more of you in Southwest Missouri!
Coalition → Building Connections That Empower
The heart of MCE lies in building and nurturing connections among individuals, businesses, and community groups statewide. We attract and engage new members eager to actively address environmental concerns in their local communities.
Through regular networking, advocacy, and community listening events, we create opportunities for collaboration, exchange of ideas, and collective action. Our strength as a coalition is rooted in these connections, making us a reliable and non-partisan partner that allied organizations and grassroots initiatives throughout Missouri depend on.
Through the creation of our Advocacy Resource Center, MCE has begun to increase our support to community coalitions and organizations in Missouri. While we have offered fiscal sponsorships for many years as a way to lift up nascent environmental efforts, we are now able to offer mini-grants, travel stipends, and technical assistance to aligned community coalitions and organizations addressing environmental harms.
MCE’s newsletters and e-alerts are a vital information resource for those in our state who want to know what’s happening throughout Missouri. We keep our members and subscribers tuned into what’s happening in the Missouri legislature and state agencies, making it easy to testify or contact officials about bills, rules, and regulations moving through the Missouri Capitol.
Environment → Committed to a Cleaner, Safer, and Protected Missouri
Our relentless commitment to Missouri’s environment is our North Star. We advocate for clean air, safe water, protected lands, and healthier lives for all Missourians with our organizing and day-to-day work. Even in the most challenging times, the mission continues because we understand that protecting our environment is not optional, it’s essential. We firmly believe that every Missourian deserves to live in a clean, safe, and protected environment, regardless of their race, income, or geography. Not just today but for generations to come.
Sometimes this means traveling to small communities with big environmental problems. Other times, it means speaking out on national platforms to bring attention to dire issues impacting people in our state. No matter what it takes, we know that our work is vital to our cause.
At Missouri Coalition for the Environment, our name isn’t just a title. It’s our ongoing promise to our fellow Missourians and our planet.
