Missouri has over 185,000 miles of rivers and 286,000 acres of lakes/reservoirs that are protected by Missouri’s Clean Water Law. Missourians depend on these waters for drinking and to support local economies through fishing and recreation. Lawmakers in Jefferson City want to erode Missouri’s Clean Water Law (HB 1973 & SB 823) by stripping any ability for the State to restrict pollution from agriculture operations. Missouri has over 500 Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) and more are coming. Under the Clean Water Act, states are allowed to develop their own laws as long as they are as protective as the federal baseline. In a race to the bottom, Missouri lawmakers and Big Ag lobbyists want to undermine our Clean Water Law by statutorily preempting DNR’s authority to address non-point source pollution and indirect pollution.

Dear elected official,

Missouri has over 185,000 miles of rivers and 286,000 acres of lakes/reservoirs that are protected by Missouri’s Clean Water Law. Missourians depend on these waters for drinking and to support local economies through fishing, recreation and more. Our clean water law has served our state well for more than fifty years. In 2016, nearly 80% of Missourians voted to renew a tax that helps keep our water clean. Eroding our Clean Water Law following such a historic vote in support of clean water is not an option. Please protect our clean water law!

Sincerely,

Missouri voters
