The issue: West Lake Landfill

Since 2010, a smoldering fire has burned at the West Lake Landfill in St. Louis County. The smoldering fire continues to release obnoxious odors into the air that impact the quality of life and health of people living closest to the landfill. That's why former Attorney General Chris Koster filed a lawsuit against the landfill owner in 2013, which has yet to be settled. The landfill owner expects the smoldering fire to last until 2024. That could mean 15+ years of families having to live near a smoldering landfill. It's not right and they deserve to be relocated. The families living closest to the landfill did not cause this problem but they certainly know how bad it is. That's why good-hearted people can't justify selling their homes and putting another family in the same unfortunate position they find themselves. There's also the problem of radioactive contamination at the landfill from material that can be traced back to uranium processing in St. Louis for The Manhattan Project. MCE supports the people around the West Lake Landfill and we support Senator Chappelle-Nadal's Senate Bill 22, which will help her constituents.

What you can do: Tell your state senator to support SB 22.
