On June 17, 2015 MCE Food and Farm Coordinator Melissa Vatterott participated as a speaker at The Real Cost of Food panel discussion! This event at Schlafly Bottleworks was part of the St. Louis Local Foods Challenge, and offered insights about what it takes to grow locally and sustainably.
On June 9, 2015 MCE Food and Farm Coordinator Melissa Vatterott and Summer 2015 Intern Divya Babbula attended this conference sponsored in part by AgriMissouri and Missourif Foundation for Health. It was an opportunity for community-based organizations, schools, and farmers to discuss the different institutional purchasing barriers and potential solutions. Farm to school programs can be a way to build healthy habits in children, stimulate local economies, bolster community health, and expand knowledge about sustainable agriculture and the environment.
On March 3, 2015 MCE Food and Farm Coordinator Melissa Vatterott and Spring 2015 Intern Megan Finnell attended the Meet the Buyers Event, the purpose of which was to allow local farmers to connect with grocery stores, food distributors, and restaurants in the St. Louis area. The event was held in the IL Monastero Building at St. Louis University and hosted by several organizations and institutions: Illinois Department of Agriculture, University of Illinois Extension, AgriMissouri, Saint Louis University, Illinois Farm Bureau, University of Missouri Extension, Illinois Speciality Growers Association, and Missouri Farm Bureau. At this event, Melissa networked with individuals from several organizations - growers and buyers alike.
