Contributing your time and energy is valuable to us!  Do you have a passion for the environment and a valuable skill that you are willing to share?  The Missouri Coalition for the Environment is always looking for dedicated people to devote their time, energy, and talents to our organization.  Some of the volunteer skills we are looking for are:

INTERNSHIPS

Internships are located in our St. Louis headquarters at 3115 S. Grand Blvd., Ste. 650, St. Louis, MO 63118 and are unpaid, unless otherwise specified. We can work with students to obtain college credit and are usually an eligible entity for public service stipends. Our office is accessible by metrolink and metrobus and there are bike racks up and down the street. There is free parking across the street on Hartford behind the Commerce Bank Building.

SPRING 2017 INTERNSHIPS OPPORTUNITIES

Legislative Intern

MCE seeks a part-time intern from January through May 2017 to assist the Policy Director in informing and activating members during the legislative session. Responsibilities include drafting weekly e-alerts, monitoring legislative activities in Jefferson City, and helping organize member visits with legislators.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with the legislative process and policymaking
  • Good organizational skills
  • Flexible work style to handle dynamic nature of legislative work

Hours:  15 hours/week

SUMMER 2017 INTERNSHIPS OPPORTUNITIES

Community Relations Internship 

In our work to engage citizens in government decision-making we regularly seek public documents through the Sunshine Act and the Freedom of Information Act. We strive to make these documents accessible to the public and and other government agencies. MCE is seeking a fall intern to design an online platform for the public, media, and organizational partners to access the documents we receive. These documents range from reports about the radioactive West Lake Landfill, water quality testing, correspondence between government agencies, and design plans by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Qualifications: 

  • Applicants should have web design experience in Word Press.

Hours: This is a part-time position and the schedule can be set around working or school hours.

Democracy in Action Internship

We have recently begun working in the area of opposing corporate influence upon our government, which impacts our ability to protect & restore the environment. As part of an ongoing project, the Democracy in Action intern will assist in developing a strategy to engage and organize a coalition of organizations. The overall goal of this program is to promote an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to establish that money is not speech and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.                                                                    

Duties Include:

  • Identify potential organizations for a coalition

  • Collect relevant documentation to develop strategy

  • Develop persuasive material

  • Be involved in developing a non-partisan group focused on this issue

Qualifications:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Research and Organizational skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Passionate about policy/legislation/social justice issues

Hours: 10 hours per week for 10 weeks. Hours are flexible. This is an ongoing internship program, with the possibility to extend after 10 weeks.

Development Internship 

The work of MCE is made possible through a combination of grants, individual donations, special events, and other fundraising efforts. The Development Intern will assist the Development Team to increase membership and funding streams to advance the mission of the organization. The Intern will interact with all program areas, participate in message strategy sessions, develop promotional materials, and help the Development Team plan and execute fundraising efforts.                                                                           

Duties Include:

  • Investigate and organize fundraising activities, such as events and merchandise offerings

  • Grant research

  • Donor correspondence

  • Update donor database

Qualifications:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Research and Organizational skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a group

  • Passionate about policy/legislation/social justice issues

 

Hours: The times for this position are flexible but will require a commitment of at least 5 hours/week.

Environmental and Policy Research Internship

The Environmental and Policy Research Intern will assist the Clean Water Policy Coordinator in data collection and analysis to help shape MCE’s advocacy strategy around Missouri state water protection. The intern will conduct research on Missouri water and soil quality environmental data including nutrient and other impairments in rivers, streams, and lakes. Research topics will also include agricultural practices that reduce runoff pollution in waterways and various questions surrounding the Farm Bill and Clean Water Act.

Qualifications:

  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills

  • Policy or legal knowledge, experience, or strong interest

  • Political Science, Environmental Studies, Ecology, or other relevant major

  • Must value natural resources and be passionate about environmental protection

  • GIS skills a bonus

Hours: 20+ hours per week.

Missouri Agriculture Outreach and Advocacy Internship

The Agricultural Stewardship Outreach Intern will assist the Clean Water Policy and Development Coordinators in agricultural outreach and stewardship promotion to help advance MCE’s advocacy in supporting agricultural conservation practices in Missouri. The intern will conduct outreach to groups and farmers to build power and enhance collaborative partnerships among sustainable farming advocates, farmers, and environmentalists. Efforts will include collecting success stories and documenting challenges to sustainable agriculture in the state, planning and organizing a meeting of farmers and rural constituents, and coalesce in the development on an online story map that describes these narratives and presents opportunities for enhancing conservation for MCE’s website.

Qualifications:

  • Strong written and oral communications skills; willingness to reach out to farmers, groups, and allies via phone, email, and in person

  • Organizational skills to coordinate and plan a meeting of diverse stakeholders

  • Flexible summer schedule to travel to meetings in other parts of Missouri with MCE staff

  • Agriculture-related, social science, or communication major, graduate student, or graduate

  • Must value natural resources and be passionate about environmental protection and supporting sustainable agriculture

  • GIS skills a bonus

St. Louis Food Policy Coalition Outreach Internship

MCE coordinates the St. Louis Food Policy Coalition (STLFPC). The Food & Farm Research and Outreach Intern will provide opportunities to collect and analyze data about the St. Louis regional food system, interview stakeholders to facilitate the activities of the Food Policy Coalition, and develop web content.  Stakeholders to be contacted work in diverse interest groups, including public health, community development, university extension researchers, nutrition educators, farmers, and city government. Knowledge and experience in environmental science, environmental studies, soil science, sustainable agriculture or local food is a plus.
                                                                          

Duties Include:

  • Contacting food system stakeholders about STLFPC projects, and identifying and engaging with stakeholders interested in joining STLFPC

  • Creating and distributing important food system information to stakeholders

  • Researching data from the U.S. Census of Agriculture, the USDA’s Food Access Research Atlas, and other data hubs

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience in environmental science, environmental studies, soil science, sustainable agriculture, or local food access is a plus

  • Excellent communication and research skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Comfortable communicating with new people via email, telephone, and in person. Stakeholders to be contacted work in diverse interest groups, including public health, community development, university extension researchers, nutrition educators, farmers, and city government

Land Stewardship Internship

MCE's Food and Farm Program works to support local farmers using environmentally responsible practices in multiple ways. Our Food and Farm Coordinator seeks an intern who can assist with developing an award program for farmers across Missouri and within the St. Louis Regional Foodshed to acknowledge the work they do on their farms to produce nutritious food, conserve soil, and protect water quality. This award program may also include acknowledging other food system stakeholders that support these farmers, such as restaurant owners, mobile markets, and others.The Land Stewardship Intern will also assist with assessing the needs of farmers within 150 mile radius of St. Louis based on meetings we had with farmers in the fall of 2016. 
 

Duties Include:

  • Work to develop an award program to acknowledge leaders in the local and environmentally responsible food system movement.

  • Outreach to farmers and institutional purchasers about their respective needs in order to increase the amount of local food produced and made available to consumers.

Qualifications:

  • Experience or interest in sustainable agriculture, local food, environmental impacts of our food system

  • Experience with outreach and ability to communicate comfortably with diverse groups of people

  • Outstanding writing, research, and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Detail-oriented and a conscientious worker

Food & Farm Legal Internship

MCE’s Food & Farm Program works to change the status quo of Missouri’s agriculture industry so that our farmland supports a robust, sustainable, secure, and equitable food production system that preserves the environmental integrity of our air, land, and water. The F&F Legal Intern will conduct legal research and writing, comparing policies across states and regions on other food and farm related issues and draft model legislation. The F&F Legal Intern will also engage in stakeholder processes at the state level, such as attending meetings with the Missouri Department of Agriculture, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri's Soil and Water Districts Commission, and the Natural Resources Conservation District state office.                     

Duties Include:

  • Legal research of model policies for land stewardship
  • Engagement with elected and agency officials

Qualifications:

  • Current law student or graduate 

  • Outstanding writing, research, and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Detail-oriented and a conscientious worker

Hours: 25-40 hours/week, depending on availability

Marketing & Communications Internship

The Marketing & Communications intern will work with the Development Coordinator to craft educational messages for the public that describe MCE’s work, why it is important, and how the public can engage more effectively in protecting and restoring our environment. MCE’s work product is not always intended to be consumed by the general public but the public directly benefits from our work and our efforts are enhanced when the public is engaged. Tasks will include developing materials to increase awareness, involvement, and understanding of MCE, its mission, and programmatic work among the community, current and prospective donors, partners, and other stakeholders. Familiarity with current environmental issues will be very helpful, as well as a background in communications, public relations, marketing, environmental studies/science, or related field.                                   

Duties Include:

  • Develop marketing and communications materials to promote MCE’s mission and programmatic work for print, web, and social media

  • Identifying ways to promote MCE to diverse communities, donors, and other stakeholders

  • Utilize new tools and technologies to create engaging educational material

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Creative and well-organized

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Passionate about environmental issues

  • Knowledge of graphic design programs and software are required

  • Knowledge of web design desired

Internship Details 

We strive to provide a multidisciplinary experience that gives you the chance to see the many sides of an environmental issue. We will plan field trips and other outings to make sure you get out of the office to see the communities we serve and understand first-hand the impacts of the issues we address. MCE’s main office is located in the heart of the South Grand neighborhood overlooking Tower Grove Park. We have a rooftop deck with a great view of the City where we’ll host social and educational events throughout the year. We hope you will consider joining us!
 

What St. Louis Has to Offer During Your Internship

St. Louis is one of the most livable cities in the country. The cost of living can’t be beat and the summer is full of free events, such as Shakespeare in the Park, outdoor concerts, and free yoga at the Tower Grove Farmer’s Market. And with Food Truck Fridays across the street and all that South Grand has to offer, including the best Thai and Ethiopian for starters, you'll get to experience a variety of St. Louis flavors. And St. Louis needs environmentalists. Sure, you can go to Portland or Boston or San Diego, but if you want to understand truly the challenges facing environmentalists, Missouri is the place.
